They were all crowded into the small galley Yarrow boasted. Jerryâs office was bigger, but it wasnât as relaxed an environment, and she wanted them to be able to toss ideas back and forth as much as they could. She needed an open conversation for this. She would have preferred alcohol to loosen their tongues and brains, but Jerry didnât want to share her moonshine with the rest of them. That was something she would keep for herself when it was dark and lonely.
âVivian,â Jerry started. âYou said you had heard a rumor about a stash of vestigen in Potelia?â
âYeah.â Vivianâs eyes widened. âBut I donât know much more than that.â
âMy sources tell me Potelia is medically advanced.â Vivian shook her head as if she didnât know. Jerry clenched her jaw. Maybe she shouldnât have brought her to this meeting of minds. âWhat do you know?â
âThatâs it. My ex-boyfriend wanted to go there because he said they hand it out to anyone who needs it.â
âI can confirm they donât,â Jerry added, pointing at Vivian.
Yafe nodded. âI can as well. That is one thing I donât think they can keep under wraps from the rest of Penum.â
âAgreed,â Ursula answered.
Jerry shifted her gaze from Vivian to Azar. âYouâre educated.â
His brow drew together. âThat doesnât mean anything. Iâve never been to Potelia.â
âNo, but you took history, yes? For your certificate?â
âHistory of engineering, yes. Not political history.â Azar scoffed and crossed his arms.
âIâve been doing as much research as I can,â Yafe interjected. âIt seems Potelia has always led the world in education and in science. Itâs rare to find an uneducated citizen there. Everyone is given access to primary and grammar school, and beyond. Whatever they want for free.â
âSounds idyllic,â Jerry muttered.
No one said anything for a good five seconds. Then Ursula pressed her palm on the small wooden table they were all crowded around. âWhatâs going on, Jerry?â
âWell, weâre going to Potelia. Yarrow, anyway, and I need you to take our regular runs to Beren Island.â
Ursula wrinkled her nose. âDo I have to?â
âYes.â Jerry looked over each of them. Azar and Yafe were firm in her decision, but she knew they would be. They always supported her crazy ideas. Ursula would whine because she had to do something she didnât want to. Vivian didnât seem phased by the conversation. Then again, sheâd known about this stash for a while it seemed. Sacha, however, chewed her nail in the corner. âSacha.â
âWhat?â
âAre you in for this or not?â
She shrugged.
Jerry resisted the urge to growl. âI need an actual answer. Youâre free to move over to Calluna while weâre gone, or just leave.â
Jerry almost hoped it was the latter. Keeping her mouth shut as she waited for an answer, Jerry eyed Sacha as silence reverberated around them.
âFine, Iâll come.â
âGreat,â Jerry muttered. âHereâs what I think we do. We go to Potelia under the guise of escaping Raegina. The difference in communities is known, so I donât think there will be much question as to why weâre leaving here.
